China strengthens links with Caribbean
18/11/2008 @ 11:24

Investors in luxury Caribbean property will be interested to hear that China and Cuba have been working on a number of trade and loan deals as part of China's ongoing link-strengthening process with the West.

Chinese president Hu Jintao met Cuban leader Raul Castro on Monday (November 17th) and reportedly discussed a number of trade issues.

The giant Eastern power is Cuba's second largest trade partner after Venezuela and, according to the BBC, trade between the two amounted to around £1.5 billion in 2007.

The communist nations are looking to strengthen relations that have been building since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

"My visit is aimed at increasing friendship and co-operation between our two nations, and working together with our Cuban comrades to build a promising future," explained the Chinese leader.

Mr Hu is on a tour of Latin America and the Caribbean, seeking to build China's trade as it seeks to become the world's number one superpower.

Cuba came under the control of Raul Castro earlier this year after his brother Fidel stepped down from power after almost five decades in charge.
