One Bahamas celebrated in schools
19/11/2008 @ 17:28

Pupils at a school in the Bahamas have been learning about the culture of their ancestors after transforming their assembly area into an "island experience with the colours of the Bahamian flag, arts and crafts, and a bevy of native materials to depict the Bahamian story", according to the Freeport News.

The Island nation has a rich history and staff and pupils at Freeport Junior High have decided to celebrate it on an annual basis with an event called One Bahamas which began this year.

Head teacher Janice Pinder explained to the newspaper that the school would continue to teach its pupils about the history of the indigenous Bahamians.

"This is our first official school celebration and we think that it is important for our students to know where they came from and the lives lived by Bahamians before them," she said.

"We have vendors set up with displays of straw bags, native dishes, bennie cake, coconut treats, everything Bahamian.

"Some of the children did not know that these things even came from our islands, so this is good exposure for them."

Those looking to buy luxury property in the Bahamas will enjoy learning about the culture of their potential new homeland.

The One Bahamas celebrations take place around the nation, with other schools, such as St Thomas Catholic School, taking part too
